The BNP is ready to sit for dialogue with the government once it restores the long- demanded non-party caretaker government to oversee next elections, its spokesperson said on Wednesday. "Our stand is clear, we are ready to hold talks with the government at any place about the non-party caretaker government. But the government has to announce beforehand that they accept the demand in principle," Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, responding to media queries.
Fakhrul visited the family of Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, a Joint Secretary General of the party, who was arrested on charges of violence during last month's shutdowns. He spoke to Rizvi's wife Arjumand Banu Ivy at their residence in the morning. The BNP has been insisting on the revival of the constitutional provision of caretaker administration that the government scrapped through the 15th amendment last year.
The issue of talks came to light after the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested such an initiative during her visit to Dhaka last week to end the political stand-off. The European Union on Wednesday also pushed for of political dialogue between arch-rivals Awami League and BNP. BNP's Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed on Tuesday also urged the government to move for 'consensus'.
Regarding the demand on caretaker government, Fakhrul claimed any public opinion survey will show that more than 90 percent people want the national election to be held under a non-party caretaker government. "So, whatever tactic the government employs, the people will not accept any election if it is not held under a non-party caretaker administration."
