A day after the High Court issued a split verdict over his bail, BNP's Acting Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir went to the SCBA complex to 'consult' its president. Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas entered the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) building on Tuesday noon minutes after Alamgir walked in. Zainul Abedin, the chief of SCBA, an organisation led by pro-BNP lawyers, entered his chamber with the BNP leaders afterwards.
They had an hour-long closed-door meeting there. "They have come to consult on legal issues," BNP Joint Secretary-General Mahbubuddin Khokan, also a leading pro-BNP lawyer, told bdnews24.com.
After spending a week in 'hiding', senior BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul and Vice-chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, had appeared before the High Court on Monday to seek bail in two cases filed over bomb blasts and arson attack during hartal hours on Apr 29. The bench of justices Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Mohammad Nazrul Islam Talukder, however, had issued a split verdict.
Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, the senior judge of the bench, had granted them bail until a police report is submitted. But Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder had ordered the accused to appeal for bail within seven days in the trial court. Getting a week of respite, Fakhrul had said they would continue their legal battle in the court. "At the same time, the people's movement in the streets will go ahead," he had added. Forty-four BNP leaders were accused in the case filed with the Tejgaon Police Station over an arson attack in front of the Prime Minister's Office while 28 were named in another filed with the Shahbagh Police Station over explosions at the Secretariat.
