BNP to unveil new protest plans today

The BNP will hold a press conference on Saturday to announce their next programmes to press the government for M Ilias Ali.

Party's joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told bdnews24.com that the BNP acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir would make the announcement.  The opposition is expected to announce various programmes, which might include general strike.

Ilias Ali, one of BNP's organising secretaries and also a former lawmaker, went missing on Apr 18. Police recovered his abandoned car from a street in Mohakhali. The BNP had been blaming the government for his 'disappearance'.  On Thursday, the ruling Awami League general secretary and also the local government minister Syed Ashraful Islam requested the BNP to refrain from enforcing general strikes.  He said the government was trying to find Ilias and requested the opposition to assist in the search.

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the government had failed in finding out Ilias and was blaming the opposition. He said his party enforced shutdown as it was 'forced' to do that as they had no other options.  The party's standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday said that the opposition would be forced to launch movements from Sunday to "overthrow the government if Ilias is not released".

BNP chief Khaleda Zia alleged that security agencies and RAB 'abducted' Ilias.  Countering the allegations, prime minister Sheikh Hasina said the 'disappearance' was a 'drama staged by the BNP'.
