Local government minister and Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Thursday urged BNP not to choose general strike anymore as a way of pressing the government for M Ilias Ali.
"Do not make the people hostage through more shutdowns. The people have no link with Ilias' disappearance. Spare them from such harassment," he told a press conference in its Dhanmondi office."Instead, help the government find Ilias," Ashraf said. He made the comment as BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday gave the government a Saturday deadline to find the missing leader with a threat to go for an indefinite general strike otherwise.
A number of leaders of the newly formed 18-party alliance, preferring not to be named, said that they discussed plans for a tougher movement at a meeting of the alliance on Wednesday night. Khaleda presided over the meeting held at her Gulshan office. She instructed her party and alliance partners to be ready for a tougher anti-government movement.
They said BNP chief also asked the alliance partners to form committees at different levels for a 'well coordinated movement'. M Ilias Ali, also the BNP chief of the Sylhet chapter, went missing on Apr 18. Police later recovered his car abandoned on a street in Mohakhali.
The opposition alliance enforced general strike for three consecutive days until Tuesday across the country.
