Missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali's mother-in-law Mahfuza Khatun has requested the prime minister to 'unconditionally' return Ilias to his family. "Ilias's wife Tahmina Rushdir Luna is my second daughter. They have three children. We are worried over the future of Abrar Ilias, Labib Shahara and Saiyara Nawal," said Mahfuza at a press conference on Friday.
The press conference was organised at the residence of Magura district BNP president Kabir Murad. "We do not know where to go or who to turn to. I have convened the press conference to covey our appeal to the honourable prime minister," she added.
The widowed Mahfuza repeatedly burst into tears as she read out her statements to the journalists. One of the BNP's organising secretaries M Ilias Ali, who is also a former MP, has been missing since midnight of Apr 18. Police recovered his abandoned car from Amtoli in Mohakhali. The BNP accuses the government of abducting him.
It recently enforced a three-day countrywide shutdown demanding that the government returns Ilias Ali. At a media briefing on last Tuesday, party chief Khaleda Zia gave the government an ultimatum to find out Ilias by Saturday and warned that if not, tougher agitation programmes would be announced from Sunday. Ilias's mother-in-law also demanded that the government withdraw the case over vandalising of vehicles at Magura during the general strike as her son Anjum Hasan Sumon was falsely implicated in the case.
District BNP office secretary Aminul Islam Shelly and Jubo Dal leader and Ilias's brother-in-law Abu Sayeed Al Mamun were also present at the news conference.
